Of course, the latter was unavoidable with the sad passing of actor Christopher Evan Welch it’s a testament to his strong performance that the exit of the character had such a profound effect on the show’s dynamic. There were some uneven points of this first season, though, aside from the abandoned characters the half-effort to build romantic tension between Richard and Monica is one of them, as is the unfortunate disappearance of the Peter Gregory character.
Jared’s misadventures with technology is a stellar example of that. Though it came a little too close to Workaholics early on, Silicon Valley eventually found its voice and delivered character-centric humor that feels unique to the show. From “mean jerk time” to Erlich’s threatening the neighborhood kids to the prevalent satire of the tech industry, the laughs came often, which ultimately is the most important element. But when it comes down to it, Silicon Valley is a comedy, and the jokes only got better as episodes wore on. Dinesh and Gilfoyle were less developed, serving mainly to be rivals to each other and offer up a bulk of the gags, but their presence added a load of humor in every episode (Dinesh’s dilemma about sleeping with Gilfoyle’s girlfriend was a particular standout).
